Where to start

The Challenge of Public Speaking

Can anyone become a good public speaker?

The short answer is yes, but as always the longer answer is more complicated.

Certain of us will have a natural bent towards speaking to groups of people and of course at the other end of the spectrum there are those of us who are truly terrified of any form of public attention.

Human beings are magnificent in their capacity to overcome challenge and even the weak kneed and gibbering can learn to speak in public, but there is no magic bullet.

Like anything else you need to practice in order to improve, but the difficulty with public speaking is that the bar is always set too high. If you literally can’t bring yourself to stand up, where are you going to get to practice?

Even for those who can bring themselves to the task, our experience may be so intense that we feel disempowered by our reaction and can learn nothing but how to grin and bear it.

It is true for everyone that in order to develop as a public speaker you need to speak in public. You can’t read a book and magically get better at it; it just doesn't work that way.

You also can’t learn whilst terrified so the only answer for everyone is to lower the challenge until it seems doable.

For those of you who already have some experience and want to develop further skip forward to “Public Speaking Development” otherwise read on.
